Both Justin and I come from strong education families and the elementary classroom is near and dear to our hearts. When I wrote The Push: A Story of Friendship, I wanted to help children explore the power of friendship, discover the beauty found in all people, and learn that there is no challenge too great to overcome when we allow others to be a part of our lives.
The words in The Push demonstrate what I long for every child to experience in life. But just as important is the artwork. To have my best friend (who can’t use his hands) co-illustrate this book using his voice, a pen and tablet, and a little math is a blessing. Each image was chosen to pull readers into the story. Just as the characters of The Push learn they can do more together than on their own, the words combined with the images of The Push create a story far more powerful than anything Justin or I could create on our own.
School is a place to explore new ideas, learn new ways of thinking, and prepare for the world. So we put our heads together to figure out a way to bring The Push into the classroom.
